Tanoa Tusitala Leads in Sustainability

Tanoa Tusitala Hotel has been honoured with the Tanoa Hotel Group’s Innovation and Sustainability Award, celebrating the property’s remarkable commitment to environmental stewardship and community impact across the Pacific.

Over the past year, the hotel has emerged as a true sustainability leader, weaving smart innovation with meaningful local action.

One of its standout initiatives is the Farm to Table programme, where more than 49 varieties of fruits, vegetables and herbs are grown on-site. The result? Fewer imports, less packaging waste, fresher ingredients and an authentic experience guests can taste in every dish.

The hotel’s Kitchen Waste-to-Compost Initiative has been another game-changer, diverting 12.9 tonnes of food waste and over 300 kg of coffee grounds from landfill in just eight months. All of it is transformed into nutrient-rich compost that feeds the hotel’s expansive gardens.

Recycling has also surged ahead. Since 2024, the team has recycled 7,707 beer bottles, while a new partnership with Coca-Cola helped divert 3,326 cans and 1,224 plastic bottles in just two months.

Energy efficiency continues to be a priority, with the hotel’s solar hot water system reducing boiler diesel use by 50%, saving more than $180,000 over nine years. LED upgrades, solar outdoor lighting, a 35,000 litre rainwater harvesting system, refillable amenities and a fully paperless operation which has eliminated over 34,500 sheets of paper.

Beyond operations, Tanoa Tusitala remains deeply rooted in its community. The team actively supports conservation, youth development, cultural events and volunteer programmes. Recent efforts include mangrove and native tree planting, coral restoration, blood drives, coastal clean-ups and training opportunities for local students.

Through the Tanoa Planet Care Initiative, staff and guests have also planted 386 trees and plants, contributing to regional reforestation and biodiversity efforts.

Group Management praised the hotel’s achievements, noting that sustainability is not just an operational practice, it’s a responsibility to our people, our communities and our environment.
