Lautoka Sugar Mill

Lautoka is known as the Sugar City because it hosts the largest sugar mill in Fiji.

Built for the Colonial Sugar Refining Company by workers from India and the Solomon Islands between 1899 and 1903, the mill employs some 800 staff today.

From Marine Drive, it is possible to walk to this mill, the backbone of the local economy. The mill opened in 1903 and is still by all accounts the largest sugar mill in the southern hemisphere. There are no tours, but you should be able to see the conveyors and pipeline for loading sugar, woodchips and molasses into the waiting cargo boats.
