The piece of art, by Tony McNeight was launched on Thursday, and is situated on the sports field below the Museum in the Auckland Domain. Director, Kamini Reddy attended this on behlf of The Reddy Group and Tanoa Hotels. It will be open 8am-6pm every day leading up to Anzac Day on April 25.
War hero and Vicotria Cross recipient Willie Apiata was there, resplendent in medals.
People can write a personal message on a metallic disc or "poppy" - non Aucklanders can do this online - and place it in the allocated space.
Now that ANZAC day has come and gone, the Giant Poppy is now moving into the next stage, which is to install it as a permanent piece of art somewhere in Auckland city.
